Dressmaking and tailoring courses: from pattern to finished garment
Three levels in the sewing workshop: dressmaking from scratch, made-to-measure pattern cutting and a group for alterations.
The sewing workshop is open again with its usual three levels, now on timetables that do not overlap, so you can take dressmaking and pattern cutting in the same term. That was the most repeated request in last year survey.
The three groups
- Dressmaking from scratch · Mondays, 17:00 to 20:00. Starting with the machine, stitch types and fabrics, and finishing with three simple garments: a skirt, a shirt and a pair of pleated trousers.
- Made-to-measure pattern cutting · Wednesdays, 17:00 to 20:00. For those who already sew and want to stop depending on commercial patterns: measurements, base pattern, transformations and grading.
- Alterations and restyling · one Saturday a month, 10:00 to 13:30. Hems, zips, linings, waist adjustments and how to give a second life to a garment you no longer wear.
The workshop
The room has eight sewing machines, two overlockers, a large cutting table, dress forms in three sizes and a steam press. You do not need your own machine, although anyone who has one is welcome to bring it and learn to get the best out of it.
Final project
Both term groups finish with a garment chosen by each student and made from start to finish: pattern, cutting, assembly and finishing. In June we put together a small exhibition in the academy hall with the work from the whole year.
